FUNDING: Small Grants for Projects for Deaf Children
Posted on 20 March 2008.

The following email is being circulated by the UK-based international organization Deaf Child Worldwide (formerly known as International Deaf Child Society):

Dear colleagues,

If are in touch with local organisations that want to start new work with deaf children, then please forward the information below about the latest round of the Deaf Child Worldwide Small Grants Programme.

Thank you so much for your help with this.

Round 7 of Deaf Child Worldwide’s Small Grants Programme is now open. The deadline for completed concept notes is 30 May 2008.

The Small Grants Programme (SGP), aims to have an impact on the lives of deaf children, their families, service providers and policy makers by establishing quality partnerships with local organisations based in our priority countries within East Africa, South Asia or Latin America. We fund one to three year projects of up to £10,000 per year.

Go to www.deafchildworldwide.info/sgp for more information about how to apply.

If you applied to SGP in the past, then please note that in 2007, we carried out a strategic review and an evaluation of SGP. We have made some significant changes to the programme. These include:

a.. Smaller geographic focus. Now only organisations based in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda), South Asia (Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka), and Andean region of Latin America (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru) can apply.
b.. New strategic focus areas. We are only looking for projects which work towards these key areas.
c.. Cross-cutting themes. All projects must consider poverty, gender, the social model of disability and sexual health and HIV/AIDS.
d.. Longer projects. You can now apply for projects that are from one to three years long.

Please e-mail info@deafchildworldwide.org if you have any questions or would like to discuss your project idea.

Tanzania as developing County has so many problems facing people with hearing disability in education (communication skill). In 1984 the Association deaf was formed to providing training and employment-related services for hearing impaired persons in the United Republic of Tanzania. It was targeted to promote the education, training, employment and general welfare of the deaf. It has opened their branches in Regions and Districts in order to reach the deaf where they are living. But the problem of education to disabilities Children is still in the deferent areas
Also in 1999, the Government stated its intention to elaborate a National Policy on People with Disability in the National Population Policy Draft. Responsibility for the promotion of employment opportunities, especially for Youth and people with disabilities, lies with the Ministry of Labour and Youth Development, in liaison with other institutions, The Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children. Encouraging the sectors, NGOs and Religious Organizations to invest in provision of social services for people with disabilities; and establish social security measures that address problems of people with disabilities. Although there are good National Policy on the People with disability, the problem of stigma and discrimination to deaf children are still in Healthcare, education and communication in social activities at Nzega District.
According to our Ministry of educating Youths and students on the impact of drugs abuse at Nzega District, sponsored by the Foundation for Civil Society. We realized that Nzega has many disabilities kind of deaf and dumb who are isolated in the community from lack communication with others.
After realized that we start to follow-up in order to get the best information though discussion some deaf persons, government sector leaders, and deaf hold. We found that deaf have been discriminated from the community for:-
- Lack of communication in healthcare
- Lack of communication in education
- Lack of communication in social activities
In order to alleviate the problem I suggesting to:-
†To educate people from community on how to communicate with deaf children
†To educate government sectors,NGO`s on how to participating with deaf people in social activities
†To support deaf children in education.
†To awareness community to through artist group on the right of deaf children in education
†To educate community through T-shirts and Magazines on the rights of deaf children in participating in social activities.

HI,

This is Dorine from Kenya, i hope by the time you finish reading this mail you will have known all the contents that are in it. Well, i run a school that is basically for the DEAF CHILDREN who are not a position to support themselves and who have single parents, whose parents died of HIV/AIDS and some of who are orphans and have nobody to carter for them. I also have some of them who are normal as in they do hear and have no means of supporting them selves by doing that, i have a school that begins from kindergarten to secondary school and i provide for them food, shelter and also clothing. We do depend on well wishers as well and that's why i took the initiative to write to you and hear your response.

Well about a week ago, the school was demolished by people claiming that it on the Kenya railways and so it must be put down. Everything was crushed down by a bull dosser and nothing was left safe. Both the books and the classes were destroyed inside there and this being done at around 3.00AM when people were asleep. We received a phone call from one of the neighbors that the school was put down and some of the children were affected since they were left homeless and no where to go to. This event has actually traumatized us and we are left to wonder where we will take the children since we are about to open schools in 12th January 2010.

This school comprises both girls and boys who are very much willing to work hard and become very prominent people. It has actually affected us since we have no where to go and really don't know what to do about it since we have no other place we can go to. I therefore write to you this mail and i believe i will get some help and support from you just to help save a child and have them enriched, empowered with the powerful education they deserve.

Thank you in advance and may God bless you. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Kindly respond since we really need your help and support will indeed make a very big change into these children s' lives.

Thank you so much.

Yours sincerely,

Dorine Bakhoya.
