Down -Helping Hands: One-stop centre for rehabilitating the disabled
Stephen Ng
Jan 29:
KIOKU isn’t Japanese despite the way it sounds. Instead, it is a homegrown
non-governmental organisation committed to serving the needs of disabled
persons, particularly those who are wheelchair-bound.
Its name is the Malay acronym for Perkhidmatan Keluarga Interaksi
Orang-orang Kurang Upaya, or the Services for the Whole Family and People
with Disabilities.
Under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,
Kioku’s main objective is to build bridges between disabled people from
various societies and members of the public.
“We are a fully voluntary service without racial, religious or political
bias,” said its president Chris Thasan, who is wheelchair-bound himself.
“Our earnest hope and cry is for the public to recognise and support the
disabled in their struggles, efforts and determination to continue living
an ordinary life, and strive for better quality of life. Please lend us
a helping hand to help the disabled community.”
Under the Constitution, a person with disabilities is a full citizen. Said
Thasan: “We want to be treated with dignity. Sympathy is not what we are
looking for, but the opportunity to live our lives to the fullest like any
other citizens.”
One way of achieving its objectives is by organising the Kioku Family Day.
“Our role is mainly to give motivation and to raise the spirits of the
disabled people,” said Thasan. “We seek to improve the perception of
society towards the disabled community as a whole, being disabled persons
ourselves.”
Every year, the Kioku Family Day is organised to bring together the
disabled people, their family members and members of the public. Said
Thasan: “We are looking for a main sponsor to support our Family Day this
year which will be held in September,” he said.
“At the same time, we are looking for investors who are willing to help
start up small workshops for the disabled people to do tailoring and
repairing of television sets.
“We are providing training for the disabled people to help them live as
independent people,” he said. “We urge members of the public to look into
the transportation problems faced by our disabled friends.”
In July 2004, Kioku started its One-Stop Centre in Taman Sri Sentosa for
the rehabilitation of the disabled people. The centre provides advice,
counselling and assistance for other technical problems faced by disabled people.
Kioku’s One-Stop Centre is located at Taman Sri Sentosa, Jalan Kelang
Lama, Kuala Lumpur. Chris Thasan can be contacted at (016) 360-3527 or
(03) 7782-7640.

organisations or individuals who want to make a difference. However,
the publication of these homes does not mean that they are endorsed by
Sunday Mail. Volunteers and well-wishers are encouraged to check out
the homes themselves before offering any assistance.

Down -Support the disabled, says Awori
By VPPS ( Sunday, January 29, 2006)
Vice President Moody Awori has urged Kenyans to consider the needs of
disabled persons, particularly children, as one of their major priorities,
with a view of helping them to live normal life.
Mr. Awori said it was time families discarded retrogressive beliefs,
where they hid children with disabilities under the guise of cultural
beliefs or bad omen.
Saying that such cultures were outmoded, children with disabilities could
be helped to live a normal life just like any other human being.
“Children with disabilities form an integral part of the society and
must be recognized and allowed to exploit their full potential in all
spheres ‘’, he stressed.
He was speaking this evening during the official launch of the “CURE”
International Kenya Children Trust Fund, held at a Nairobi Hotel, where
he was the chief guest.
The fund is used to assist children with disabilities. Mr.Awori disclosed
that there were over 700,000 children with disabilities in Kenya, whose
deformities did not come as a result of a curse, neither have they
committed any mistakes to be punished.
Disability in Kenya, said Mr. Awori, poses a major challenge to the
economy and has remained one of those areas that has not been given
much attention and focus.
He said most statistics do not identify people with disability, hence;
planning has largely missed them.
The Vice President said that even in terms of national budget allocation,
institutions dealing with Persons with Disabilities are often poorly
funded, making them incapable of rendering effective services to disabled people.
He announced that the government plans to conduct a national survey to
establish the number and pattern of distribution of persons with disabilities.
Mr. Awori said that the survey will also establish their demographic,
socio-economic and cultural characteristics; nature, types and causes of
disabilities, specific problems they face by gender, and the nature of
services and rehabilitation programs available for them.
The Vice President commended CURE International for its commitment and love
towards the children with disability.
He noted that since inception of CURE International in 1998, over 31,000
children have benefited from services of the organization.
A Director with Kijabe CURE International children’s hospital, Kijabe,
Dr. Tim Mead, said that the institution changes the sick children’s
lives through emotional, spiritual and physical treatment.
He said that some of the surgeries the hospital carried out included,
spinal and congenital deformities, crooked arms and feet.
The launch was also attended by Africa Inland Church Bishop Rev. Silas
Yego, CURE International , Executive Director in Kenya, Sam Baguma, Senior
Vice President of CURE International, Craig Hammon, Kijabe Mission Hospital
Chief Executive officer Andy Mayo, among others.

Disabled air passengers new regulations -Aqeel Qureshi
Dear All:
I am attaching some useful IATA documents
related to people with disabilities for air travel.
Persons with disabilities will be able to travel
around the European Union more easily under
new regulations adopted by the European Parliament
(I am pasting this news in this email below)
Please also visit on this link where you can find

New EU help for disabled flyers
Disabled air passengers will be able to travel around
the European Union more easily under new regulations
adopted by the European Parliament.
The rules mean airports are solely responsible
for assisting disabled people. Before, the responsibility
was split between airlines and airports.
The assistance must be free and "seamless",
from arriving at one airport to leaving another.
It will be illegal to refuse booking or boarding to a disabled person......
please refer to the below "BBC News" website for more detail

Importance of Employment promotion in vocational rehabilitation for Disable Person -Sundar Shyam Thakur
The vocational rehabilitation is skill-building an art and implement
that into vocational/professional sectors.
In less developed country like Nepal, it is quite useful to provide
such skillful training for vocational rehabilitation.
Japan, as a developed country, has given the priority in such
vocational rehabilitation program to solve the problem of
unemployment for disabled people.
What I learnt and felt while staying at Japan from June 14th to
July30th, I am trying to present as follows:

Snowfall fatalities reach 71 as more troops head north to help
The death toll from snowstorms that have blasted northern and central Japan
since early December rose to 71 on Monday after three people died while
clearing snow, police and news reports said.
Also Monday, Japan's military dispatched nearly 200 troops to the northern
Akita Prefecture to help residents shovel snow, after about 100 troops were
sent Sunday to the hard-hit central prefectures of Nagano and Niigata,
according to prefectural police and officials.
In Akita, a 51-year-old man died of head injury after falling from the roof
that collapsed while he was shoveling snow, prefectural police spokesman
Shoji Hashimoto said. Three other people were injured while trying to
remove snow in the area, he added.
In Niigata, an 89-year-old man was found dead in his snow-covered backyard
with a shovel near his body, apparently after falling from a roof while shoveling
snow, said Niigata Prefectural Police spokesman Daijiro Tamaki.
Seven others in the prefecture suffered minor injuries while shoveling snow,
Tamaki said.
In Nagano Prefecture, an 86-year-old woman died in a similar accident,
the prefectural police said.
The Nagano prefectural office said in a statement that it dispatched
a medical team Monday to the village of Sakae, which was isolated by
heavy snowfall of as much as 3.15 meters.
The three latest deaths brought the number of snow-related casualties
to 71, according to Kyodo News agency, citing its own tally as of Monday.
Many died while shoveling snow and two women died last week after a house
collapsed under the weight of snowfall on the roof.
More than 1,000 others have been injured.
More snow was expected in northern Japan on Tuesday.
